URBAN RENEWAL AND STRUCTURAL PLANNING FOR THE NEW TOWN OF CHANGPING
Changping is one of Beijing’s 11 satellite towns and a gateway to the most significant sights of the capital, like the Chinese Wall or the Ming graves. The task was to develop a superior concept for the existing downtown and the heterogeneous new buildings.
Three centres were developed, with the aim of sustaining the identity of Changping as a city of tourism and sport. They form distinctive focus points for the city through their particular emphasis of use, namely: tourism, sport and shopping. They are linked by an organic sequence of green spaces, public spaces and pedestrian roads, which break through the stringent grid of the existing city, thereby referencing the traditional Chinese principle of urban development, through a combination of grid and organic shapes.
